They are certainly not the dog for everyone but with the proper family, great training and loads of socialization German Shepherds make great pets - with the right owner. And you do not need to "start treating them with dog collars" either - obedience training with a good dog trainer will do well but shock collars used by an untrained owner is not a good idea. If you wanted an aggressive German Shepherd this would probably do it. Not a good idea.
